Which countries require e-invoicing?

More than 60 countries worldwide have introduced or announced mandatory e-invoicing. The largest adoption is seen across Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East, and more countries will introduce new requirements between 2026-2028. You can read more about this in our E-invoicing Guide.

What is PEPPOL?

PEPPOL (Pan-European Public Procurement OnLine) is an international network for securely exchanging electronic business documents, including e-invoices. It uses standardized formats such as PEPPOL BIS to enable businesses and public organizations to exchange compliant documents across borders and between different ERP systems.

What is XRechnung?

XRechnung is Germany’s official XML-based e-invoicing standard for public sector invoicing and is increasingly used in B2B transactions. It is a structured, machine-readable format that complies with the European EN16931 standard and supports automated invoice processing.

What is ZUGFeRD?

ZUGFeRD is a German hybrid e-invoicing format that combines a human-readable PDF invoice with embedded machine-readable XML data. ZUGFeRD complies with the European EN 16931 standard and supports digital, compliant invoice processing.

How can businesses prepare for mandatory e-invoicing?

Businesses can prepare by reviewing country-specific requirements, assessing their current ERP and invoicing processes, and ensuring they can generate and exchange compliant electronic invoices. Implementing an e-invoicing solution that supports formats such as PEPPOL BIS, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD can help simplify compliance as regulations evolve.
